Ways to realize that what is on the page is not quite what’s in your head.

  • Put your manuscript away and don’t look at it for a few weeks or a few months.
  • Read a printout.
  • Read it aloud.
  • Change the font color.
  • Change the font.
    • An excellent editing font is Comic Sans MS. Many authors swear they find more mistakes using this font than any other.
  • Listen to it.
    • Use MS Word’s Read Aloud feature.
    • Use your phone’s read screen feature.
    • Download the SpeechCentral app (for a one-time purchase fee of $8).
    • Use a screen reader like NVDA (free for windows) or Voiceover (ships with MacOS or iOS). (This does take a little practice.)
  • Put it in someone else’s hands.
    • Get some beta readers.
    • Get a critique group.
